What exactly are the powers of the presidency in Argentina? My understanding is that a lot of Latin American countries have more powerful presidencies that allow for law by decree and bypassing Congress to some extent. Because from a US perspective, a lot of what he’s proposing sounds impossible without a majority in Congress.

Yes, the president in Argentina is very much the top dog. More so than in the US even.

Big protests against the new government already, apparently.

More charitably, desperate people do desperate things. And there are many occasions when the "what the hell, can things really get any worse?" sentiment has actually been answered in the affirmative.

The punditariat class of the LATAM press truly reunites some the most disgusting people of the planet

If they were American style they’d just be spending all day interviewing Fernandez-Milei voters in small town cantinas in Salta or Chubut.

In the UK the equivalent is interviewing pensioners during daytime hours in town centres.

If the past is any guide, more of the same old rubbish?

A lot voted for him only because they were totally desperate, though this may turn out to be another proof of "you are doing this because 'things can't get any worse'? They can ALWAYS get worse".
