Police officers had to put down a loose steer in south Omaha on Tuesday morning.

Around 11 a.m., officers were dispatched for an animal complaint near 33rd and Q streets, and learned that the steer got loose from Nebraska Beef, according to Omaha police.

A man told officers that he was pinned against a car by the steer at the Quik Trip in the area. Omaha police said he was checked by medical personnel at the scene, but was not injured.

The steer rammed a police cruiser at one point, Omaha police said.

Lt. Tyler Stricker said the call was made to put the steer down for public safety.

"We had a lot of bystanders and civilians that were trying to come out and see what was going on, so the decision was made at that point for the safety of the public that we had to put the steer down," Stricker said.

Officers shut down 33rd street and cleared the area before discharging their weapons, Stricker said.
