36 hours is kind of short, if you ask me.

I wish Option 1 hadn't passed....but if we have to do it that way, at least allow the governor to retain his authority for a reasonable period of time.

I'd say 5 days or so.

I guess that'd be an acceptable compromise.

I know I've been gone for a couple of days at a time before, though, and it seems kind of harsh to simply snatch away the Governor's power so easily.

I understand the reasons for it, of course. Nothing can move forward if the Governor isn't there for whatever reason...so yeah, I'll accept the 60 hours.

I can not support the recall thing with judges...as it just pretty much eliminates the independent judiciary as it would be subject to the public will. That's one thing that definitely doesn't need to be democratized.

Otherwise I have no problem with the amendment.

Nay to Amendment 6a. Regardless of the number of votes required to remove the justice from office, the whole idea of it scares me. We're basically saying here that we're allowing a 2/3 majority of citizens to decide themselves whether they agree with the justice's ruling. I don't think any type of "vote of confidence" for the judiciary can be justifiable under the principle of the independent judicial system.

Aye to your motion.

Why is it "futile" to vote again on permanence?

I do think it would be a much better alternative.

by elmiminating the public approval clause.

Appoint the judge....and be done with it. Let him work.

Although I'd obviously support permanent judges...

How do we take into account conflicts of interest?

We don't. We have to rely on the competence and goodwill of the person we choose to be judge, but once we have a judge, we can't just subject him to public approval on his decisions.

Heck, why don't we just create a jury out of every citizen in the Mideast then? We can decide every case by a majority vote.

In my opinion...we have to accept what the judge does, and considering your proposal to nominate a judge for each case individualy, that process can be used to minimize the risks of conflicts of interest.
