Robert Morgenthau announced his retirement as Manhattan D.A. at the age of 89. The New York Times article mentioned that, in addition to being deaf in one ear and walking with difficulty, he was a WWII veteran. This references the point that WWII veterans are now, on average, quite old and in retirement.

Congress used to be full of WWII veterans, so I looked back to see how many there still are. With the departure of Ted Stevens and John Warner, we are down to three in the Senate: Daniel Inouye, of course, but also Daniel Akaka and Frank Lautenberg.

In the House, I searched backwards by Age. Ralph Hall (age 85) served in the Navy. No one else currently serving is on the list of the 100 oldest Reps. I looked up the most senior Reps, and they're all too young for WWII service. Is Hall the last World War II veteran in the House?

Wikipedia article said he was a shipyard welder. There is a Senate PDF listing all of the WWII veterans who have served in that chamber. Most of them I hadn't heard of because their careers ended in the 1970s or earlier.
