Wasn't someone arguing this summer that Obama would lose white Democrats nationwide?

It's not unusual for white southern Democrats to vote for the more conservative candidate. I know a ton of individuals like that who are very tolerant.

It raises questions when thousands of Democrats who voted for Kerry over Bush decided to vote for McCain over Obama, or not at all. They certainly didn't vote for Kerry because of his relative conservatism.
