I do think that identifying with your guy because you're part of the same community, and you rarely get to vote for someone from that community, is different from racism. I would say Jews getting more excited to vote for Lieberman is a different phenomenon from random people getting really excited to vote against Lieberman because he's Jewish.

I believe racism is the wrong word to describe what's happening.

But I do think skin colour is becoming a determining factor where it really shouldn't be.

It exists as a factor. Ideally it wouldn't, and on balance it hurts minority candidates much more than it helps, but we're human and we live in a diverse country with a rich and complicated history and that informs how people vote.
