I thought they'd move to abolish the filibuster for legislation after Democrats weakened it with a simple majority last year?

That was only for non-SCOTUS administrative and judicial appointments. It was tactical nuclear warfare more used to destroy formations of soldiers and ships than continents.

So basically they would force the American public to do without basic government services for an indeterminate period of time, all for sake of letting oil and coal companies pollute a little more and ensuring that wealthy people pay as little tax as possible.

Maybe he thinks people will be like "these Republicans are total assholes and we don't agree with them on most things. Then again, they are our assholes and they are tough motherers who stand by 100%!" ...just they did with them in 2002 and 2004.
