4/16/19: WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange arrested in London

Wikimedia Commons

WikiLeaks Co-Founder Julian Assange has been arrested in London. Assange has been under the protection of the Ecuadorian government and has been in their embassy in London for the last seven years. Assange was charged with espionage as his company, WikiLeaks released DNC emails illegally. There was a discussion that he might be prosecuted in the United States, but Attorney General Keith Ellison has hinted that he won't extradite Assange. Assange and WikiLeaks have been accused of being Russian puppets and have apparently spied on the U.S. Government.

5/1/19: Gardner, Walker, Haley Announce Bids

Wikimedia Commons

Recently, three more Republicans, Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO), Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI), and Fmr Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) all announced bids for President in 2020 for the Republican nomination. Walker ran for President in 2016 and dropped out due to poor fundraising and bad debate performances in the debates. As Governor of Wisconsin, Walker has had a bumpy ride and is currently slightly unpopular. Out of the three, Gardner is the most serious candidate, considered a possible frontrunner in the race. While, Haley is considered a rising star in the Republican party ready to make an impact and paly a large role in the party going forward.

Excerpt From Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) campaign speech:
"Today, as the Senator from the great state of Colorado, I will be announcing my bid for the Presidency of the United States. As the Senator from Colorado, I have worked hard for our great state and have been a bi-partisan senator throughout. I am proud of my work and will continue to do so as your President, if elected.."

Excerpt From Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) campaign speech:
"I am officially announcing that am once again running for President. Four years ago, we did not win but we ran a tough campaign and inspired many. This time will be different and we will win the primary and the general election against our radical liberal socialist President. We will win."

Excerpt From Fmr Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) campaign speech:
"Today on this beautiful day in Charleston, South Carolina, I am announcing that I am running for President. I served honorably as the Governor from South Carolina and am proud of my work. I am excited for this journey ahead and will work hard for the American people, to the best of my ability."

2024 Republican Presidential Candidates:
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)
Fmr Gov. Mike Pence (R-IN)
Fmr Gov. John Kasich (R-OH)
Neurosurgeon Ben Carson (R-MI)
Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO)
Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI)
Fmr Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC)

5/25/19: GOP House Launches Investigation into First Lady Jane Sanders

Wikimedia Commons

The House of Representatives led by Oversight Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) has announced that they will investigate First Lady Jane Sanders. Jordan is also the founder and former Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, which is very conservative and has pushed the Republican party far to the right. The committee announced that they will investigate the First Lady and her role in a land deal as the President of Burlington College in Vermont in 2010. Jane Sanders resigned under pressure from the college board of trustees after it became apparent she was not able to secure the commitments for the donations she’d promised.

This investigation is considered silly by a large percent of Democrats in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as the Executive Branch, where President Sanders has made a statement against the investigation. Many moderate Republicans in both chambers of Congress have called the investigation "worthless" and don't think it is rooted in anything. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) has stated that he will not take part in the investigation but will let it continue.

President Bernie Sanders Press Release:
"This investigation is utterly ridiculous. My wife and our great First Lady Jane did nothing wrong and shouldn't be investigated. I am against this and urge the House to put an end to this ridiculous investigation to dig something up on me and my administration."

First Lady Jane Sanders Press Release:
"This investigation achieves nothing and is only trying to take us down. As First Lady, I have tried to help the people and made America a better place. As the President of Burlington College, I tried to help students in any way I can. I didn't do anything that warrants this and am deeply upset about this.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA):
This investigation is necessary to see what the First Lady did and if she did anything illegal. We are trying to make sure that everything was right and want to make sure that there aren't any abuses of power by the White House and by the President and the First Lady. We are doing this for the American people and not for one person.

6/15/19: Hong Kong Protests Over Reform

Wikimedia Commons

Peaceful Protests have broke out with huge crowds of protestors in the city in Hong Kong, which is part of China that gets some independence from the Totalitarian nation. The territory was part of the British Empire for nearly 150 years until July 1st, 1997, when it was officially transferred to China. The deal that was made was that Hong Kong could have some support of independence from China for 50 years, and then China could do what it wanted with the city and surrounding areas. China has taken dramatic steps over the last few years to incorporate Hong Kong into China and to limit its rights. This is what prompted the protests in Hong Kong, which took over the city. The police were overwhelmed and mostly responded peacefully, though some were violent. As a result of these protests, 2 people died and an unknown number were imprisoned.

Even tho you’re a dem? You wouldn’t vote for Bernie? I’m moderate/center-left, I identify as independent and Kasich is a good candidate in my eyes, but you’re a dem, and you wouldn’t vote for Bernie? Surprising
Oh yeah, 100%. I'm a moderate/centrist too. Fringe on being an independent. I very much dislike Bernie and do like Kasich.

7/10/19: Trump Officially Announces He Will Not Run in 2020

Wikimedia Commons

2016 Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump has announced in a tweet that he will not run for President in 2020. He had speculated that he might want to run for President in 2020 and had criticized fellow possible rivals like Ted Cruz and others. Trump has said that he will not endorse a candidate and has said that he disapproves of President Sanders and has called him "the worst President in American history and it isn't even close." Trump in 2015 shocked people by running, and shocked even more by winning the 2016 Republican Nomination. Trump did go on to lose to now President Sanders in a close election, but his campaign was a shock to many and has went down as one of the greatest stories in American politics.

7/18/19: July Primary Polling

2024 Republican Primary Polling:
Sen. Cruz: 22.5%
Sen. Rubio: 21.2%
Undecided: 14.2%
Kasich: 14.1%
Haley: 9.1%
Gardner: 7.2%
Pence: 5.0%
Carson: 3.4%
Walker: 3.2%

8/1/19: First Republican Primary Debate:

Wikimedia Commons

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Winners: Kasich, Cruz
Losers: Pence, Gardner

Highlights: The First Republican Debate was not eventful or significants as most of the attention was centered towards President Sanders and his administration. The candidate spent a lot of time criticizing the President and what he had done as President. However, there were some interesting moments between the candidates including some attacks directed at the frontrunner Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). Cruz spent a lot of time attacking fellow Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) on his pro-immigration stance and his attempts to negotiate with former President Obama and now President Sanders. Cruz said that Rubio is pro immigration and is "just wrong on the issue." It was a contentious moment, where Rubio tried to defend himself and his stance. However, this fell flat and Rubio seemed unprepared to take on Cruz. Another interesting moment was when the moderators asked the candidate about former Republican Nominee Donald Trump and his presence in the party. All of the candidates tried to not directly attack Trump but all showed displeasure towards the 2016 Nominee and tried to distance themselves from him. Ohio Former Governor John Kasich (R-OH) stepped in and directly attacked Trump, in contrast to his other fellow candidates. Kasich called Trump, a "cancer" on the party and his remarks and demeanor are "dangerous for America." Kasich also attacked Cruz, and said that we should be trying to unite and not shame politicians for trying to compromise with the other side. Polls showed that Kasich came out of the debate as favorable and was seen as the main winner of the debate, which surprised many.

8/15/19: Extreme Floods in India

Wikimedia Commons

India has been hit with extreme floods that has killed at least 200 people and has displaced over 1 million people. This has been one of the worst floods to date in world history and has been a disaster. The Indian government is not prepared to deal with the situation and this will only make India situation with solution worse. This has brought back talk about Climate Change and the deadly effect that it has. President Sanders has said that we need to work on Climate Change before the situation gets worse. The President said that he plans to meet with world leaders on the issue and what we can do to change it. Bernie also wants to work on some type of bill on Climate Change, though which seems unlikely due to the Republican controlled Congress in both houses.

9/1/19: September Primary Polling

2024 Republican Primary Polling:
Sen. Cruz: 24.3%
Sen. Rubio: 20.2%
Kasich: 17.5%
Undecided: 11.6%
Haley: 9.6%
Gardner: 6.0%

Carson: 3.9%
Walker: 2.9%

9/13/19: Second Republican Primary Debate:

Wikimedia Commons

Location: Orlando, Florida
Winners: Haley
Losers: Carson, Cruz

Highlights: The Second Republican Debate was very eventful compared to the First. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R-SC) came out as the big winner. Many candidates attacked each other including some personal attacks on each other. Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) spent a lot of time attacking fellow Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and said that he was barely "a Republican" due to his stances on immigration. Cruz attacked Rubio's "bi-partisan record" and said that Rubio's stances are ridiculous and terrible for his state. Cruz's attacks fell flat and seemed out of touch. Cruz lost the debate and came out as the biggest loser in the debate. Rubio also didn't have a great debate performance, though it wasn't a big loss or anything like that. As previously mentioned Nikki Haley won the debate as she got her point across well and seemed like a safe choice. She had a powerful statement, where she attacked both Cruz and Rubio, and their hateful speech towards each other. Another candidate that had a poor performance in the debate was Ben Carson, who stumbled with his words and made many mistakes throughout the debate. Carson tried to explain his stances on many issues, though they didn't make any sense to voters and he seemed dumb.

9/25/19: College Admissions Scandal, President Responses

Wikimedia Commons

The College Admissions Scandals involving Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin, and others has shaken many people in the United States including those in power. This scandal came out a few months ago but those involved have been given their punishments, which seem very light and were less then expected. Those individuals listed lied about extra extracurriculars and had people take the ACT/SAT tests for them. This is a huge scandal that has shaken up colleges and people in every sector of government. President Sanders has responded to this scandal by discussing white privilege and the need for reform in many areas of American society. Those individuals listed have been sent to jail for short sentences which Sanders also spoke about and he said that jail sentences for crimes committed white and black people must warrant the same or similar punishment or jail sentences. Sanders spoke about injustices in American society and spoke about the need for criminal justice reform in the United States

10/5/19: Sanders suffers heart attack, VP acting President

Wikimedia Commons

Breaking News. President Bernie Sanders has suffered a heart attack while working in the oval office. The President was sent immediately to a nearby hospital near George Washington University. The heart attack was very bad and it is unclear if he will survive and what exactly will happen. Bernie is taking time off for now, and Vice President Klobuchar has taken over as Acting President for the time being. As of now, Bernie is in the hospital and is doing alright though doctors are concerned and aren't saying anything as of now.

The President has gotten messages from around the country in both parties, and around the world from leaders like Vladimir Putin and American allies like French Prime Minister Macron. Everyone is praying for the President and is hoping for the best.

Vice President Klobuchar, Acting President (D-MN) spoke:
"Hello America. Today is a sad day as President Sanders suffered a heart attack and is in the hospital. I am hopeful that he will be okay and will return to work very soon. As of now, I have taken over as President according the 25th Amendment as the President transferred his duties to me. I will work hard for you, the American people until the President is able to resume his duties as President. Let's pray that this is soon and that he will recover very quickly."

Lenin's come back from the grave I see. That sounds like it probably would've been important enough to be it's own update though, how could you just pass over this?
Oh my god, that is so embracing! Meant Putin obviously!

As a bit of a sidenote, how did the Supreme Court rule in Rucho v. Common Cause with a D majority? That could really shake up the upcoming 2020 elections if they deemed partisan gerrymandering unconstitutional.
Wow, I didn't think about that.

SCOTUS would rule against Gerrymandering 5-4, which would dramatically change the 2020 Election.

11/19/19: Third Republican Primary Debate:

Wikimedia Commons

Location: Denver, Colorado
Winners: Kasich, Gardner
Losers: Carson, Pence

Highlights: The Third Republican Debate was not so interesting which was not expected. In previous debates President Sanders was commonly attacked by the candidates as he was labeled as a radical socialist, which is nuts. This time, the candidates did not attack the President with respect as he is in the hospital still without a heart attack. However, this debate still had two winners and losers that did stand out. The winners of this debate included John Kasich and Cory Gardner. First, Former Ohio Governor John Kasich (R-OH) did very well in the debate and stood out because he came out as honest and smart. Kasich seemed like he was a return to bipartisan politics and compromise. Colorado Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) also did well according to Republican primary voters. Gardner's policies seemed mainstream and made a lot of sense. On the other hand, two Republican candidates stood out in a negative way and did bad in the debate. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson (R-MI) did bad in the debate and has many gaffs similar to the 2016 Republican Primary Debates. Carson forgot the capital of the China and many were shocked. Former Indiana Governor Mike Pence (R-IN) and 2016 GOP Vice Presidential Nominee did bad in the debate. He came out as dull and boring in the debate.

12/1/19: Scientists warn that US is not prepared for a pandemic

Wikimedia Commons

Scientists in the United States are warning leaders that the nation is not prepared for a deadly virus of epidemic or pandemic proportion. They say that the nation does not have contact tracing and is lacking in number of beds, ventilators, and other important supplies. Many leaders are ignoring this, notably Republicans who are the majority in Congress. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for instance has ignored this. President Sanders who is still in the hospital has said that the nation must get ready for a pandemic and must prepare. He says that we must be ready to stop and contain a virus that will happen eventually. Vice President Klobuchar who has taken over many of the President's duties has invited politicians of both parties to come to the White House to discuss this further.

12/19/19: Fourth Republican Primary Debate:

Wikimedia Commons

Location: Richmond, Virginia
Winners: Kasich, Rubio
Losers: Cruz

Highlights: The Fourth Presidential Debate was a win for the more moderate candidates in the race including John Kasich (R-OH) and Marco Rubio (R-FL). Both did a great job and appealed to the voters. It was a very interesting debate as the less known candidates didn't say much to put them apart compared to the other ones, good or bad. John Kasich was the main winner in this debate and he proved that he is sensible and a reliable safe alternative to both the progressive President Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and more conservative candidates like Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). Kasich spoke about a return to Washington where both parties would compromise and not view each other as enemies. Another candidate that did well was Marco Rubio who stood out as he made his point across on immigration very well. He discussed his plan for immigration and explained why he was willing to work with President Obama on it and other more liberals politicians. Senator Cruz attacked him and it failed. He stood out in a bad way and seemed irrational to most Americans, even conservative Republicans around the nation.

President Sanders has continued his recovery and is now ready to go back to work. Today, he went back to the White House and is doing well. He has taken his duties back from the Vice President and is ready for work. His doctors and aids are still watching him closely to make sure that he doesn't have a heart attack again which could turn fatal. However, the President is doing well and feeling good.
