Somewhat arbitary:

1976:  AK
1980:  MD
1984:  IL, TX, WA

1992:  CA, VT
1996:  CT, DE, KY, MT, NJ
2000:  LA

2012:  MO
2016:  IA, OH
2020:  CO

This, though I'd move Illinois to 1992 or 1996.

NO. Bush was in Illinois on the weekend of November 2000, the state was a swing state in 2000....

Bush made multiple campaign stops in California and Washington, too (and both states were also closer than IL in 2000). So if you're using that logic, then those two states were swing states in 2000 as well.
