This article strikes me as being legit.

This election is going to be very, very close.   And if you believe in "the Incumbent Rule", Bush is sitting at 48.X% right now.... headed straight for tiesville.

At any rate, I suspect that the comments are legit, but that the Post reporter simply heard what he wanted to hear.
