What kind of political party just writes off 166 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House?

Answer:  a really stupid one.

The Dems don't write off the South any moreso than the GOP writes off the Northeast.

Actually, there was an improvement in NC which was slightly more substantial, if you account for national averages. However, the result there was disappointing, to say the least. I did expect Edwards to do more than that, but I guess I was wrong.

If accounted for Nader (Nader wasn't on the ballot in N.C. in 2000), N.C. had the 3rd greatest pro-Kerry/Nader swing in 2004.

In Southern counties without a substantial number of African American or Latino voters, Bush virtually obliterated Kerry. Across the 11 states of the old Confederacy, plus Kentucky and Oklahoma, whites constitute a majority of the population in 1,154 counties. Kerry won 90 of them.

By contrast, Bill Clinton won 510 white-majority counties in the South eight years ago.

Anyone know if H. Clinton or Biden improved on Kerry's 90, or not?
