It absolutely is the primary motive for the lead protesters. All these head protesters were certainly involved on leading protests on October 7th/8th and the only reason for any protest then is to support Hamas .

Honestly one thing to note about this, is that this was a janitor. I don't fully trust counter protesters or other students who have just as much of a reason to be ideological and lie about the situation but this janitor was just a normie who wanted to get home. Why would he lie here? It might be a bit of an exaggeration but the dude is pretty much the closest you can get to apolitical in Columbia.

So Is this an ideological win for the right? They've been calling out colleges and universities as indoctrination camps for a long time now. DEI as a whole has also probably taken a huge beating in public opinion.

Except the right is now saying that the left is now using " hate speech" and it must be banned. These calls for a safe space for jews are just a coin flip of whats already been happening.

Iran University Offers Scholarships to Expelled US Students

This seems to be a win-win scenario. Most of those students support the Iran-backed houthis and hamas and hate the US. So they get to join their dream country while the US is finally rid of them.

For Columbia a lot of the grad students are just cash cows but at this point they probably cost more money than they bring in due to donors being mad so it makes perfect sense to expel them.

I mean it really is a question of economics. The undergrad students are going places in the corporate or political world. Meanwhile a large portion of the grad programs are borderline scams that get the students to take out large loans . If the grad programs are no longer bringing in the money it doesn't make sense to keep them. The students in the above article certainly aren't bringing up the academic prestiage of Columbia so if any were found in the protests they would be the first to be expelled.

As Columbia law professor David Pozen writes, the university has multiple overlapping disciplinary codes and processes. The most longstanding of these are the Rules of University Conduct. Those rules were established in the wake of the campus protests of 1968 and aimed to maximize students’ expressive freedom and preempt viewpoint discrimination by the administration. When charged for an offense under the Rules of University Conduct, students are afforded representation and other due process rights.

But there is another disciplinary code administered by the CSSI, which was established in 2022 and aims to shield students from discrimination and promote the values of “Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion.” The CSSI’s disciplinary process stipulates a broader definition of discriminatory speech than either the Rules of University Conduct or federal civil rights law, while providing the accused with few procedural protections.

As Pozen explained to Vox, the CSSI provides no right to counsel, bars the accused from making opening or closing statements, and allows the administration to add new charges in the middle of the process.
