North Florida had a black former NFL player run as a Republican in the state senate seat covering Leon County. It formerly was a pretty Safe D district as Leon and Gadsden would carry it at the presidential margin while still lagging downballot trends for rurals such as Liberty would make it very Democratic. As recent as 2016 the seat voted like Clinton +8 but the Dem state senator won by 40 albeit against a random nobody.

However, in 2020 the seat was open, Democrats recruited Loranne Ausley who seemed to have been from some political dynasty in the region while Rs recruited some black retired police officer. The seat voted Biden +9 congressionally but due to some fairly decent black crossover support the R only lost the seat by 6 while doing relatively poorly with ancestral Democratic rurals.

After redistricting, the new seat became Biden +3 because it had to expand and take more rurals . It obviously flipped this year.
