I think it depends on the flavor of the election. Mitt Romney was, in hindsight, probably the best option Republicans had to take on Barack Obama (in November 2008). That may have changed since.

Still, Republicans love to support the guy whose turn it is, regardless if they're the right man for the job or situation. As such, I concur with the following:

Computer brain says.... Republican nomination 75%.  Presidency 25%.

Though maybe closer to 1:3 than 1:4.
