And the fact that Iowa is already a right to "work" state and that unions are not a big factor there nor a reason for its relative Democraticness.
Oddly, it has some of the most Democratic Whites and of the most Democratic bluecollar Whites anyhow... Grin

It was more likely intended as a pun; Braves -> Braves, Red Sox -> Redskins

Nevertheless it's pretty clearly offensive nowadays and should probably be changed.

I'm not an expert on Native American history, but was it not racist back then? What if the Patriots changed their name to the New England N*****killers back in 1913?

It would be more like the New England Negroes (also, the Boston Patriots would not be founded for years to come).  It was a word that didn't have especially negative connotations back then, the most offensive would probably have been "Injun."  It's similar to Asians in that all the words used to describe them then would be considered offensive today ("Yellows," "Mongolians," "Chinamen...").
If you were actually talking about "braves" rather than "redskins", you would be making sense here.

What's absurd about that? That's exactly what Obama's been doing every day since his inauguration. Tongue

gott im himmel

You know, panem et circenses. It was used under the Roman Empire, but still true today.

Okay don't go throwing your fancy Latin at me, buddy. Pan-Am aside, I can't remember ever learning about Elvis or hearing about The Beatles or learning who Abraham Lincoln was. It just always kinda was there for as long as I can remember.

I think many people also see time differently. I made my mother laugh the other day because she asked when something had taken place and I was thinking and said, "Um...not too long ago...2003, ten years ago." She laughed. "Ten years ago is long ago." Not in my mind. 60+ years is when you really get "long ago" in my mind.

Two years ago on the Fourth of July, I asked a very sweet and pretty 18 year old girl why we celebrate the Fourth of July and she couldn't tell me. She said, "Why?" I told her to celebrate our Declaration of Independence from Great Britain on July 4, 1776. She responded with an uninterested, "Oh." (I should note that her saying "Oh" was also "Oh you are never getting in my pants you orange haired nerd")
Given the highlighted passage here, did you mean to put this in the good post mine?

This might very well be altogether the best/worst display of slack-jawed idiocy on this general subject:
Wow, I thought the countries of Western Europe were friends and allies of the United States. Suddenly helping us catch a fugitive guilty of espionage is some act of supreme cowardice and spinelessness?? Ridiculous. I would hope and expect the United States to do the same if a German or Austrian or Italian or whatever criminal on the run was possibly flying through American airspace.
Given that Edward Snowden's whole point has been proving that Western Europe certainly doesn't have any friends or allies in Washington...

Here's a post about Chile that actually deserves to be here:

Wow, I actually had no idea that the anniversary of this horrible event was today as well, though I guess my thoughts have understandably been on another matter. Certainly an example of imperialistic US foreign policy worth remembering.

How so?  The CIA wasn't really involved in the coup.

Eh, that's technically true and not exactly absurd, ignorant or bad. The CIA didn't really have any direct involvement in the coup aside from perhaps learning about it beforehand and not bothering to do anything about it.

No, it's technically false, really, but it's indeed not as absurd as people with only a perfunctory at-a-glance knowledge of events would think it. The CIA, after badly botching its own coup, merely remained in contact with those potential coupists still in position, encouraged them in every way, reported back on everything they heard, but did not give material support (except, to a very slight degree, during the coup itself). This was headquarters (and White House) policy that the local operatives had to be reminded of.
The CIA were only told the coup date 24 hours before it happened, but I'm not sure how much earlier Pinochet himself knew the exact date.

Completely absurd post by Torie in a thread he locked:

Re: hide behind the poll...masturbation and fantasy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After discussion in the Cave, with a variety of opinions, but the majority favoring deletion, I have decided to be a moderate hero, and delete this thread because its title was too provocative (also the approach favored by one of the Mods other than myself). This is a difficult and grey area. If you want to put up a poll involving personal sexual activity, it is better to put it on the FC Board, and Bowdlerize the title. If Dave Leips ever weighs in on this issue, that may change things. But he probably won't.

And thanks for the efforts in digging up some of my posts. I don't consider such elliptical texts beyond the pale, but if the Mods think I am out of line, I will cease and desist. I tend to doubt that will be the case. I choose my words carefully I think. That is what one needs to do when flying rather close to the sun to avoid meltdown.

This thread is being locked so my reasoning can be reviewed, pending its later deletion.

I see only one absurd sentence.

Republicans don't give a flip about capitalism or free markets or competition or any of that nonsense. They just need a Big Lie to hide behind while they maim and murder poor people.
The only absurd thing about this is who it's by. Pot. Kettle.

You would only do that if it were economically productive to engage in such behavior.
People do things that they want to and that are economically productive to them but that they know or should know or used to know are wrong. All the effing time.

BeccaM claimed to be Melissa Midwest in 2008-2009 so we can reasonably doubt that we're dealing with a woman.

Tweed has obviously been catfished too many times to trust women on the internet.
I'm pretty sure there's more real cats than real women on the web 1.0. Tongue

Only people who don't know how money works thinks the budget should be balanced.
Nyes: Only people who haven't the slightest clue think the budget must be balanced every year, or even that committing that might conceivably be not harmful*. OTOH understanding that a permanently unbalanced budget is a bad thing is perfectly correct. That requires using boom years to tax companies HARD, though.

*These clueless halfwits are a supermajority not just of all strains of the right but also of the respectable centre-left, of course.

RR is right about the 90s actually, but nowt else. We're reaping the benefits of that at current.

Comparing Merkel to Hitler is incredibly unfair. She's done considerably more damage to Greece than he ever did.
That strikes me as comedic.

Unless Lief thought that Greece was never invaded by the nazis, in which case "deluge of ignorance" fits the bill to a t, of course.

The problem with anti-ageism as an ideology is that it the line between being anti-ageist and being anti-truth can be a fine one.

"Good at sex" makes no sense. It's like saying someone is good at eating.
At least you posted that in the only thread it has any business being in.

It's not as if this judge had any information you don't, or pretended to.

I don't pretend to have a law degree, years on the Federal bunch and spent hours analyzing cases pertaining to this matter.  Look the other thread was started because people found one person they never heard of that agreed with them and said that is proof the NSA surveillance is unlawful.  Now they find another guy that they have never heard of that says it is lawful and all of a sudden his opinion is wrong and doesn't count.  This is pure hackery.

What do you expect?

Lief and the other hacks on here figure that as long as their boyfriend Obama  pull this stuff with the NSA then this is must be ok!
Sadly, Kevin's got these hacks' number here down to a t.

It's kinda absurd he's directing this at one of them as if he were a potential ally, though.

That's the real problem with Bloomberg's soda policy, it doesn't really accomplish anything. Just pointless regulation. Anyone seriously expect the obesity rate in NYC to drop because of it?

I don't know, reducing the size of the default largest cup someone can get will probably have a bigger impact than you might think.
I fail to see how it could even theoretically have any impact at all.

Now, the default smallest size. That easily could.

That's because you are a pony.
