Should have taken Romney.
Honestly, I wonder if the REPUBLICANS shouldn't have taken Romney. For President.
Seriously. I know that Romney always polled HORRIBLY versus both Hillary and Obama. And he was never a popular figure among anyone, even among most Republicans.
But he wouldn't have run such an erratic, bizarre campaign. And he wouldn't have picked this joke of a VP. And right now in the current financial meltdown, he'd have been able to speak a LOT more credibly than McCain is.
And a lot of Romney's problems were base problems -- the overwhelming majority of Republicans would have come home during the course of the campaign and anti-Obama voters would probably have been receptive to whatever negative campaign Romney opted to run. I doubt the Obama-Romney spread would be anywhere near the 15-20 point spread it was in the spring -- probably more like 5-7 points.
Obviously, we don't yet know what the outcome in November is going to be like. It could still be close, it could still *POSSIBLY* be a McCain victory. But I think the chances of a substantial Obama win -- even a minor landslide -- are getting better and better. If that turns out to be the case, I wonder whether Romney might not have come closer than McCain.
