Freshman Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-Dennis) will almost certainly face a Democratic primary challenge if he votes against impeaching President Donald Trump and could lose contests for organization lines at county conventions early next year, six Democratic leaders told the New Jersey Globe.

One possible challenger is Brigid Callahan Harrison, a prominent Montclair University political science professor with strong times to New Jersey’s 2nd district.  Harrison told InsiderNJ that she would think about running.

Harrison says that Van Drew read his district incorrectly.

“People want to know whether or not the allegations made about the president were true,” Harrison said.

If Van Drew votes against the Trump impeachment, some Democrats suggested that he should either retire or switch parties.

This district is rapidly trending Republican, and a primary challenge like this could very well help the Republicans regain it sooner rather than later.

Trending Republican from 2018, you mean?

didn't he barely win this seat against someone who was flamboyantly racist in 2018?  maybe the district was more republican than he thought and this is an excuse to keep his seat as he didn't do amazing against a terrible candidate in a democratic year.  That or he's just really dumb.  Isn't this district basically a mix of farms and the Atlantic City area?  seems like a very polarized district.

Yup! The 2nd district covers almost all of South Jersey.  I suspect that a big part of it's conservative lean comes from the large number of retirees in and around Ocean and Atlantic City as well as the rural areas inland from the coast.

Rare event, no? (A seat swinging from lean X to lean Y)?
