Picking Lieberman would alienate independents and Republicans. McCain would lose in a landslide.

Depending on how he wins, he'd either need to pick someone from the Evangelical wing of the party (Huckabee) if the primary was particularly nasty, or a moderate Republican from a swing-state (Tommy Thompson, Tim Pawlenty, Tom Ridge, etc.).
