Numerous cultures recognizes a third gender. The most well known probably is the hijras in South Asia, but also various groups in the Pacific and Natives Americans as well, off the top of my head.  

Cis is the opposite of trans, Joe.

Never even heard of Cisgender before. Not even sure why there even needs to be a word for it but whatever.

Because it sounds better than un-transgender.

I highly approve of any neologism based on Latin etymology, so "cisgender" is great.

yes, it reminds me of learning about transalpine and cisalpine Gaul
