Sorry Marokai, but I think we've found a bill where you and I don't agree. Tongue This seems like an issue that would better be dealt with on the local (not even the regional) level or preferably decided by each establishment. If people want to smoke in a bar or a restaurant, then those businesses should be able to cater to them.

I'd be willing to compromise (if the Senate agrees) to make this bill only apply to public/government-owned buildings and places (parks, public transportation, etc.), but I really don't think we should be telling private establishments what to do in this situation. I feel the free market does a pretty adequate job of dealing with the issue, and if people want to smoke or expose themselves to second-hand smoke, they know the risks.

Personally, the hamburger or the drink aren't nearly as bad to me because they don't adversely affect the health of others. I do think more measures could be taken to discourage those unhealthy products as well, but it's far less of a problem.

Are you aware of the obesity epidemic?

Yes. It's horrible, but second-hand obesity isn't as much of a problem as second-hand smoke.

And first-hand obesity is a greater problem than first- and second-hand smoking combined.

I realize this will likely be over-ridden, but convictions and such, you know. Tongue I continue to believe that this is a local issue that should be decided on an establishment-by-establishment basis, and not a one size fits all government ban.

With the powers granted to my office by the 19th amendment, I redraft this bill as follows and return it to the Senate:

Nay.

I dislike the changes. Furthermore the President chose not to exercise this particular power with the Welfare Bill that he so swiftly vetoed Grin He gives the impression therefore that he is concerned more with the rights of smokers than the rights of jobseekers.

This is a rather small rewrite. As President, I'm not a legislator, so I didn't feel comfortable completely redrafting the welfare bill, as I would have liked. As I said at the time though, I'm more than willing to go back to the drawing board with the Senate and that bill and work something out.

Sorry about vetoing again. But it was either that or wait the week for it to pass without my signature and I figured it was better not to waste the Senate's time.
