Franz-Josef, although I always go by "Joe" in the U.S., not many people can pronounce the name in my passport Smiley

I also need to go by a "Gail" pronunciation. Very, very few people can pronounce my name right (except French teachers, and even there, I've seen it wrong).

Gaël in a French spelling, Gael in a (original) Breton spelling.

Fairly recent uniquely Breton name which means 'white price' - gwenn (white) and mael (prince). Used to be shortform for Judicaël, God I'd hate having that name.

Also the name of the people who settled Ireland and parts of Scotland, though there are apparently no Gaël first names in either of those countries.

Also spelled as Gwenaël, Gaïl or Gaëlle, a girl's name (which seems more common).

Of course, no English-speakers can pronounce my name correctly.

I do know. Very seldom does a white non-French person get it even after I correct them, and never the first time reading it off of a list or something.

Applies to me.

No. I haven't been called that. Most of the time they pronounce it Gail, Gay-el or they attempt a botched correct pronunciation (that's honourable and good on them) like Gga-ail

Rhymes with Noël? Or maybe it's "Ga-yuel"? Which rhymes with Maël.

I would say "Ga-ell", but I'm not him, so I don't know.

I guess Ga-ell is the best way to say it. So, yes, which kind of rhymes with Noël.

Gaël is the Francized version of a Breton name which has no accents.

I know what it is, but I was under the impression that it was actually part of your first name.

To be honest, I don't know what to call it myself. My parents told me I can say it's my middle name but it probably isn't technically a middle name.

As should be pretty obvious, I'm Gaël (or Gaël Malo).
