The numbers in the Franco cantons will be hilariously lopsided. And Schwyz will probably approve it, knowing them.

They shouldn't be banning the poster. They should be issuing minaret construction permits.

Indeed. Banning the poster itself violates free speech, and the Germans are right on that fact.

Nah, Switzerland is more homogeneous than that:

UDC's Poster campaign for the local elections, here against a project of public transportation that would permit more easy moving between Geneva and the French border city of Annemasse.

The poster says, literal translation:

The CEVA? [name of the project]

A new transportation mean for the scum of Annemasse!

Let's expel the foreign criminals!

Let's not offer them a new access to Geneva!

Let's vote UDC!

It's amusing the difference between the SVP's German and most popuarly used name and it's French name (UDC). I know they were a centrist rural party, so UDC kind of makes sense taking into account history, but in today's SVP there's nothing 'democratic' or 'centrist'. The UDC is probably more of a misnomer than the PSD is in Portugal.

And also, there's no way that poll is accurate. Really, there's really no way the Germans and French see eye-to-eye on this. Look at past referendums, especially the SVP's We Hate Foreigners referendum in 2008 or so. Unless the French in Switzerland are social liberal, pro-European but relatively anti-Muslim/immigration; which isn't really possible.

Italian-Swiss are marginally better than the Germans.

Ugh. A victory for xenophobia, again.

And yet, despite passing, it failed in Romandie.

Geneva owns again. But 47% for xenophobia in Vaud is still very high.

Interestingly, the 4 cantons who voted "No" have also the highest amount of foreigners in all of Switzerland (except the Italian Ticino where there are no results yet, because they are soo slow in counting).

But they're also very liberal areas.

I'm surprised Appenzell-Innerrhoden was more supportive than Schwyz. Schwyz's position as Most Backward Ass sh**thole in Switzerland is compromised!

I will be forced to make Italian jokes soon if those rednecks in Ticino don't move their asses.

Ticino is 68.1% YES. Even more of a backwards sh**thole than Schwyz! Good job, you stupid Italians.

Can someone who knows more about the area tell me about how they think Swiss Catholics differentiate with Swiss Protestants (roughly equal populations) about this issue?

A results map was linked to earlier in the thread (before all the nasty stuff... you know...) and here be maps of religion, language and so on...

http://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/portal/en/index/regionen/thematische_karten/maps/bevoelkerung/sprachen_religionen.html

I don't think religion played a large role, most of the deciding factors were wealth, social liberalism or number of immigrants.

I doubt Romandie voted NO because they're French or rather historically Protestant, but because they're more liberal. In fact, rural Romandie voted YES by a large margin.

From a cursory glance it would however seem that language did play a part, with the Italian-speaking part being most for No, French-speaking part being for Yes and the German-speaking part being Yes.

I don't think language itself was a huge factor, it's well known that French areas are the most liberal areas of the country.

There was a marked urban-rural divide, I'll say that.
