I've seen the opinions of both Americans and Chinese and each tend to be confident about 'winning'. This is sad because it makes war more likely.
My view is that it's insane. Neither side is going to conquer the other through a land invasion. That makes a conventional unconditional surrender extremely unlikely. Given the nationalistic feelings aroused by war, conditional surrender would also be very unlikely. That means there's a high chance it could continue until it escalates to an intercontinental nuclear exchange, even if it doesn't start out that way.
Even if one side does win, let's say we defeat them, we will only have earned the permanent emnity of 1.35 billion people for generations. They are still resentful of Japan! That could mean another war later down the line, or Chinese support for our enemies in any other conflicts that arise in the future.
