Actually not entirely opposed to this. AMLO is doing very little to address the growing synthetic opioid production in Mexico, which largely has supplanted China as the origin of this cause of death for a growing number of Americans. Asking nicely hasn't worked. Offering financial incentives hasn't worked. He apparently only responds to the application of force. Even if he wanted to--and he has demonstrated that he doesn't--he couldn't rid his country of the cartels, which increasingly have the upper hand. Perhaps Mexico would be better off over the longer term if the U.S. did step in to fight the cartels.

The most likely outcome of this hypothetical unilateral action would be for AMLO to claim at least a portion of credit for it and claim that he authorized it to help all Mexicans to live in a safer place, not to seek armed conflict with the United States over it. He, after all, is much like Trump in his enormous ego and taste for theatrics, but he is not dumb. Cartels are the enemy of the state; he almost certainly would like for the problem to go away and sooner would spin it as a positive for his own success as a leader.
