While this is surely motivated by pure partisanship, they say even a broken clock is right twice a day. Every state should have a law like this. Whether we like it or not, most people vote based on party, and if a senator should die or resign in the middle of their term, the seat shouldn't flip just because the governor's of the opposite party.
