She was the surprise winner of a by-election in this traditionally solid Tory seat in 2000. The previous incumbent, Michael Colvin, had died in a horrific house fire.

She's a LibDem of the 'popular and local but totally apolitical and ineffectual' variety.

She was lucky to hold on in 2001 and even luckier in 2005, though her majority is only 125 votes. She's widely reckoned to be toast next time. What might help her is if Chris Huhne wins the LibDem leadership - his constituency (Eastleigh) is nearby. If he's the leader he'll get a big swing in his favour from all the media coverage, which may have a spill-over effect in some of the neighbouring seats.
