"Everyone thought the world was flat until Columbus discovered America." Unbelievable something Washington Irving pulled out of his ass several hundred years ago is still taken as 100% truth by so many people who should know better.

That's an especially egregious example. Almost as bad is the appalling prominence of that mythical "Chief Seattle" speech (or rather, the numerous variants of it).

Then there's the cartoonish portrayal of the Galileo affair, which has only a slight basis in truth.

BTW, has anyone else ever heard of the infamous bathtub hoax? I find the whole concept both hilarious and frightening.

The bathtub hoax?  I offer you this blog...  (One of the best...)

The Satanist child sacrifice myth is one that won't die.  Along with the Proctor & Gamble canard...

as a Christian, do you sympathize with LaVeyan Satanism?

ROFL!  Well, I sympathize with any group of people -- religious or not -- when lies are spread about them.  Even if I find their theology repulsive.

I'm thinking of a few books in particular by a lady who claimed that, as a child, she was raised by a coven of witches and used sexually...and forced to kill newborn babies.  Obviously, it is pure crap but in the 80's, I think, some of the talk show hosts were buying it and putting her on.  I wish I could remember her name.  She was a regular on a lot of Christian radio and TV stations.

Along those lines, the Mike Warnke scam was also a load of bupkis.

Though, oddly enough, they have recently discovered the bodies of thousands of children who were sacrificed to Baal, which was long believed to be a myth.

I was thinking of the two or three people enjoying their 15 minutes about 15 - 20 years ago.  I have no doubt that horrendous atrocities were committed in the name of Ba'al.

One thing that kind of irritates me is when Wiccans try to act like those executed for witchcraft were some sort of martyrs for their faith by those evil, evil Christians ("their" referring to the modern day Wiccans of course), as if the people were actual witches and not also Christians. And of course ignoring the fact that their spiritual predecessors killed way more people in human sacrifice and that early pagans killed way more Christians than actual pagans killed by Christians. That's not even considering that the Nazis were more pagan than Christian.

I agree overall, BRTD.  But has human sacrifice as a Druid or earth religion ritual been historically verified?  I know it happened in certain cultures in Central America.  But were the practicioners of what they call "The Olde Religion" into human sacrifice?

I honestly don't know, but wonder if it might also be a canard of sorts.  Along with native Americans eating their babies.

Hate to break it to you, but that's rabbits.

That's what the beagles and the squirrels want you to believe, Lewis.
