First, I would have no problem whatsoever supporting Obama if he WERE Muslim.  So what?  Nation of Islam, no.  But mainstream Muslim, sure.

Second, he is NOT Muslim.  He is a member...and an active one at that...of a United Church of Christ church.  The UCC is a great denomination with a strong committment to preaching both the Gospel and advancing the cause of social justice.

HUGE KUDOS especially to the many fair-minded Republicans here who have stuck up for Obama.  You guys and gals are why I still have so much respect for your party.

He very well could be. From what I've seen, I'm impressed. Even if he is a democrat, and gasp...a populist leaner.

But he's socially liberal!

First, if you have more than one Bullmoose...what's the plural?  Bullmeece? <grin>

Second, thanks for your points.  I really love your posts and they remind me why I so respect the original Bullmooser -- Teddy Roosevelt.  He's a Republican (or an Independent) I could vote for!
Come on man...you know I vote on economic theory (not practice) and thats the main reason for the color of my avatar.

Same old shit from the usual suspects. These people would never vote for any Democrat. And I hate to oversimplify, but most racists in general already vote Republican.

funny you say that because:
Democrats started the KKK

Let me respond.

You say the KKK was founded by Democrats.  I suppose Nathan Bedford Forrest and the other ex-Confederate officers might have been identified as Democrats.  But the Democratic party of the south was different from that in the north.  George McClellan was regarded as an appeaser of rebellion in some corners, but not as a racist.

And very early in the Klan's ascendency in the 20th century, it became clear that the KKK had many powerful Republican AND Democratic friends.  Governor Ed Jackson of Indiana was a Republican and a very good friend of the Klan and D.C. Stephenson.  Stephenson was a socialist and then a Democrat early on.  But he became enraged by those parties' support for poor and marginalized peoples.  He formally switched to the Republican Party because it's views were more friendly to the KKK, which he headed.  So Democratic ties to the Klan, while not completely cut until the 70's, were already dying off in the 1920's.  Harry Truman famous referred to Klansmen as Ku Klux Sons of B*tches.

And as an aside...where in hell did you get the idea Mel Gibson is a Democrat?

Some people are just crazy. That is what makes me proud to be to the more moderate to liberal wing of the Republican party. I'm far enough away from those idiots, that I can just start calling myself independent.

The liberal and moderate wing of the GOP has a wonderful history and has contributed much to our nation.  I shudder to think of America without people like Jacob Javits, Margaret Chase Smith, Tom Dewey, Ike, Gerry Ford, Nelson Rockefeller, Nancy Kassebaum, Al Simpson and Mark Hatfield.  I am just sorry that there are so few of you in power!
