Look OSR, I'll ask you straight up, if Donald Trump shot someone in cold blood on Fifth Avenue, do you think that he should be immune from being prosecuted simply because he was the President?

Obviously not

That's not what you indicated here:

I think these crimes are the ones that presidents really should be charged with :

- Treason
- Trying to illegally overturn elections
- Trying to Physically harm political opponents

Other than that let the political arena and the public  deal the consequences out

If true this is on par with inciting Jan. 6/trying to overturn the election as one of the worst things he's ever done.

Maybe what happened is they really were initially there by accident and then he didn't want to give them back because he thought he would be charged for having them and was gambling on them never being taken back by force.

That is still very much a crime.

What I don't understand is what exactly did Trump expect to do with these documents.
This is why I don't buy this. Why would Trump want to help our advisaries? Doesn't make sense.

Because he's a bad man.

There are no excuses or mitigating factors that would save him.

Well, 74 million people voted for him when he lost...so let's wait and see on that.

If Trump gets even a single vote after having been revealed to have stolen nuclear secrets, we have failed as a country.

Long thread, so I'll post the details for those who don't have twitter

Quote
A group of House Republicans who were planning a morning news conference about the Justice Dept search of Mar-a-Lago have cancelled the news conference

But another group will face reporters.

House Intelligence Committee ranking member Rep. Michael Turner (R-OH) has news conference at 930am

Rep Michael Turner (R-OH): “We are very concerned about the method that was used to raid Mar-a-Lago”… citing nine hour length

He says release of warrant and inventory of search will still leave “unanswered questions”

Turner says House Intelligence Cmte Republicans are sending letter to FBI today with questions about process and relationship of “informant”

Rep Elise Stefanik (R-NY): “Fulsome investigation” is needed into Pres Biden “weaponizing” Justice Dept. against Trump

They have not yet taken questions from reporters. But this press conference has segued to talk of “Russia hoax”, Hunter Biden and the 2017 Congressional baseball practice shooting

These people have absolutely zero shame...

The article is paywalled, but the first paragraph is visible and says:

Quote
FBI agents who searched former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home Monday removed 11 sets of classified documents, including some marked as top secret and meant to be only available in special government facilities, according to documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

Another possible scenario that comes to mind ...

Do you think some of the stuff trump wanted to keep, for bragging purposes, were Area 51 and UFO/alien related classified documents/photos ?

Imagine if Trump just panics and blurts out that aliens are real, and this is how the world finds out...

Anyone who has ever mockingly said "orange man bad" or accused someone of "Trump derangement syndrome" has to apologize to one liberal in their life.

Finding an unbiased jury would certainly be a challenge.

Some eligible contenders:
  • People who recently woke up from a 7+ year coma
  • The passengers and crew of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, provided they suddenly return to the present ala NBC's Manifest
  • Women who have recently broke free of their captor's basements after being their for 7+ years
  • Time-travelers from the distant past
  • 30-year-olds who have the brains of their 13-year-old selves after wishing on a doll house covered in fairy dust during their 13th birthday

"Don't prosecute Trump, his supporters might react negatively" is perhaps the most reprehensible defense I've seen here.

It implies that Trump supporters devoid of agency and that we must all walk on eggshells to avoid risking their wrath, as if they're a rabid dog that might attack us if we look at it the wrong way. It also implies that if someone has enough supporters, they should be effectively above the law.

I mean I actually think it would be reckless for DOJ not to consider the political consequences of such a decision. Going after a former president is inherently political no matter what anyone says and that's why it should not happen other than the most serious of circumstances.

I do not agree with your belief that the President should be above the law except under extreme circumstances.

When a thread becomes dominated by OSR posts that are more quotes than actual new text, that’s when you know it’s a true Talk Elections secular blog post.

It gets tiring when it just becomes:

Fuzzy: [insane ramblings]

Red/maroon avatar: that's insane

OSR: no he is not insane, he was nice to me

Trump aides think a family member informed on him to the FBI because agents knew where to find a specific leather case, report says

Quote
Aides to former President Donald Trump believe that a member of his family may have tipped off the FBI about the presence of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, The Guardian reported.

Multiple sources close to Trump told the publication that after the August 8 search of Trump's resort in Palm Beach, Florida, aides began speculating about who could have been speaking to the agency.

...

Speculation initially focussed on Trump's political aides and resort staff at Mar-a-Lago, the outlet's sources said, before shifting to those closer to Trump.

According to the sources, some aides were convinced that only a family member would have known to point agents to a particular leather-bound box, as well as knowing the location of Trump's safe.

Damn that's wild. I wonder where one of trump's children learned to be such a self-centered, disloyal, backstabbing, dishonest piece of garbage? It is a mystery.

I would bet anything that it was Jared. He's the only one who isn't completely delusional about the prospect of prison time.

It's going to be next year probably before there's any indictment from this, if that happens. The filter team still has the documents so they don't even know what their evidence is yet.

And then they may refrain from it because he's a presidential candidate? And a potentially looming indictment fires up his base and allows him to pose as a victim again? Good lord, just indict him already.

In fact an indictment very well could actually reduce the chances of him running due to the pardon power of a president

What do you mean? That there may be a deal for a pardon if he won't run?

I mean yah theoretically Biden could promise that he’d pardon him in December of 2024 if he doesn’t run .

Theoretically, perhaps.  Practically?  There's zero chance that Biden would make such a bargain.

Well the pardon wouldn’t be given out till after the election so Trump couldn’t back out

And what's to stop Biden from backing out? Why would Trump agree to this deal when there's a very good chance he could win the election and pardon himself -- or another Republican, like DeSantis?

And even if Trump did commit some crime...

But this would set an extremely dangerous precedent because if it applies to Trump, then it would need to apply to Biden or Desantis or President Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, etc. etc.

Future presidents would be free to commit crimes without reprisal.  And it would also open up the treacherous discussion of what crimes are "permissible".

No one has as many staunch supporters as Trump and we both know very well that if the Democrats go down this path, things will not end well. Trump's personality, his staunch supporters and the current polarized climate are exceptional.

Serg it doesn't change that if (and I'll stress IF) Trump committed a crime, his apparent popularity should have no bearing on facing legal consequences.

Sorry, your defense of Trump is that his supporters are violent, rabid dogs who would burn the country down if they aren't placated?
