The Intervention in this war was handled in a way that can be only considered a ****fest. We could have gotten rid of the Taliban, putting our eggs in people with less ideologically internationalist tendencies, such as Ahmed Shah Massoud and the Northern Alliance then in the 90s. Instead we just up and ignored what was even then a major global security risk.
In many ways, our policies didn’t change. We still are trying to get rid of those Baathists of yesteryear. with the Islamists now. Admittably, it isn’t a perfect analogy, our TOW delivery is now directly run by us. But we don’t understand again that the FSA was a divided, unstable amalgamation of people. In contrast to the smaller at the time, but more centralized internationally focused Islamists, we didn’t look at the fact that trade and detection between groups were possible. We also didn’t look at the Gulf states giving our weapons to those detestable groups.
What did we get out of the fight against Communism? We got global flight from people escaping pro-Western imperialist despots from the Soviet Union’s imperialistic encroachment. What could have been solved by establishing democratic processes was too much for the businesses in America and Europe to bear. Now look at this blowback, global commerce is threatened once again and those nasty anti-liberal folks are on Europe’s borders in the form of populist parties. Truly a great success. A success that is being repeated by today’s fight against terror or the “Axis of Evil”. We’re still allied with the Saudis, we still are destabilizing already bad situations, and we still are looking forward to acting on our own unilateral interests without looking at blowback.
On more direct “topicality”, Trump obviously is being contrarian, something he does when he is angry at the less terrible adults in the room. Let us not forget that what was done then is being done now on his orders, in Yemen of all places. We’re repeating the same mistakes as before, but this time I know that with the current leadership, it could go South much more potently. Hopefully I’m wrong, and that the current damage is temporary, but logic proves otherwise.
