That was indeed suggested on BBC News (that the two by-elections would be held on the same day) if only to allow the new MP to claim a salary!

I thought it was typical to group by-elections simply to cut down costs for the government. Thus Blaenau Gwent and Bromley and Chislehurst both on the same day last year.
