Que Chivo! I lived in El Salvador for a year and loved it. The people there are incredibly caring and kind, plus it has an amazing history if you are into either liberation theology (Oscar Romero = most incredible human being to have walked this Earth) or the Latin American Revolutions.

Where would you be if you lived in El Salvador? While I was there I managed to get to 12 out of the 14 departments and lived in San Salvador/Antiguo Cuscatlan and Usulutan. Both were great places

When it comes to the violence you just have to be smart about where you travel to alone (don't take public buses alone on routes you have never traveled before). It was only rarely that I ever felt threatened.
