Okay this is dumb but why does it warrant a thread

Because kulturkampf. Republican strategists want Americans to be at each others throats fighting about culture, because they believe that is the only way they can win, by riling up their voters and getting them angry. So they focus on these sorts of things in right wing media and get their followers to spread the message and pretend these sorts of things are the most serious issues facing the country and the world.
