My guess is Crowley still wins 65-35. Ocasio-Cortez would be an amazing congresswoman but I feel like her momentum is too little, too late.

And what's so amazing about her??? Besides gender and Hispanic name...

Because she’s a progressive actually willing to fix the fundamentals problems of our declining middle class and growing gap between rich and poor.

So, only progressives are allowed to serve as Democratic congressmembers? With such "ideological purity" forget about House majority then - there are simply not enough such districts. Besides - i was (and IS) never a fan of wild-eyed idealists...

It's the establishment who are the purity trolls who do their best to make sure that progressives aren't elected.

I cannot contain my laughter at the irony on display here.

Anybody pushing the whole "we can't retake the Midwest on a platform of abolishing ICE" is a moron. AOC isn't running in Ohio or Iowa.

Totally, the national implication hot takes are really obnoxious. Crowley was overconfident and took his entrenchment for granted. It's not any more complicated than that. Ocasio-Cortez is in a safe seat and this primary pretty much was the general election. She is a fitting representative for this constituency.

It's a bad look. AOC will still win by 50 points, no need for the dramatic "establishment vs progressive" narrative that the Bernie wing is trying to sell.

This reminds me of the Bernie Sanders interview where he came across as completely uninformed about his own signature issues. That was one of several reasons why I ultimately voted for Clinton in the 2016 primary.
In spite of that, there is less at stake if Ocasio-Cortez gets elected to a House seat. It's just a House seat. I'm sure she'll be fine. She isn't putting herself in over her head as a Presidential candidate or something high stakes like that (yet), where she should be better informed (then again, Trump was never particularly informed either, he still isn't. That doesn't make it right though).

What is with this widespread attention on everything Ocasio-Cortez does? She isn't even in office yet. The media really is overcompensating for not talking about her until she won. Now this backbench candidate is somehow the leader of the Democrats? The woman got all of 15 thousand votes in a country with over 200 million registered voters.

I really think that she could end up being an important member of Congress, and perhaps even more than that in the future. But right now... there are a lot more interesting candidates that the media could be trying to, you know, cover for once.

They need something to paint a "Dems are doomed" narrative with.

Good on Ocasio-Cortez for that great response and for rejecting a pointless debate with an absolute hack.

It's unfortunate that so many of the red and burgundy avatars here are celebrating the fact that Ocasio-Cortez rejected the debate offer. It was within her rights to do so, but to evade debate with someone on issues such as these isn't the best way to win the respect of others. And yes, I have seen the posts about the debate offer to Shapiro. That still doesn't change my overall point. People on both sides of the ideological debate who chant slogans and do "soft" interviews, but do not engage in substantive debates, undermine their own credibility.

A debate for the sake of a debate doesn't make it substantive.

If Ben Shapiro wants to debate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, he should get elected to Congress. Then, as two Members of Congress, they could face off on Meet the Press or something like regularly happens.

What political candidates randomly debate nobodies?
