Amy Klobuchar Announces Candidacy in Duluth, MN
"Hello, Duluth! I'm so happy to be here in the Iron Range, where my family has ties that go very deep. My grandfather was an iron worker, like so many other hardworking Minnesotans in the region. He never finished high school, but achieved the American dream for his family by working hard, saving money, and sending my father to college. I stand before you as the granddaughter of an iron-ore miner, as the daughter of a teacher and a newspaperman, as the first woman elected to the United States Senate from the state of Minnesota, to announce my candidacy for president of the United States.
I was proud to endorse President Obama seven years ago, however, we still have much work to do. We need to end the digital divide by pledging to provide internet access to
all Americans, and yes that means for rural America! We must strive for shared prosperity, where no American goes broke to pay for their medication, where universal healthcare is achieved, and no worker is untrained for the job market of tomorrow! I have always believed in standing up for what's right, as both Senator and during my time as a prosecutor. This is why I have been an advocate for criminal justice reform, working to prosecute the guilty and protect the innocent. This is why I have stood up against the gun lobby, alongside the majority of Americans, for common sense background checks and gun control. This is why I've fought for lower prescription drug prices against the pharmaceutical companies. As the daughter of a union woman, I know a little something about the power of the little guy standing up for what's right.
Duluth, that's why I'm asking you to join this campaign, it's homegrown and doesn't answer to special interests. We've heard how far the odds are against such big names, but we here in the heartland know a little something about grit, determination, and hard work. I'm not afraid to work to make your voices heard, thank you!"
