This still doesn't explain why flyover country WWC people deserve a tax cut.

I mean of course, I would support my own interests. Quite frankly, I also never get this sympathy for these rural racists in Appalachia, I never understood why we must pander to them? Maybe I'm missing something here, but I don't think I am.

So we should be subsidizing WV racists?Huh?

We get it, you hate white people and you hate poor people.

I mean honestly WV is just full of rural, racist hicks who can't tolerate Democrats because Democrats want to do something about climate change and don't play white resentment politics. The old Dixiecrats couldn't bear to see their beloved party actually decide to support minorities. Also let's be honest, if WV voted Democrat, Republicans would say the exact same thing about how awful it is.

If you want to stop subsidizing poor, stupid racists, then stop supporting the party that wants to give them free healthcare, social security, UBI, and welfare.

I see you've returned to your precious Republicans, before the election is even over.

Huh You're the one with the blue avatar.

The avatar's a meme look at the username

To quote BRTD:

All I'll say is I have never found even a single one [of these avatars] to 1-have any sort of humor content whatsoever or 2-been an enlightening or interesting form of political commentary. They're also annoying in that they make it difficult to keep track of who posters are although I might just start putting anyone with one on ignore on principle as long as they have one so that won't really be an issue.

I don't disagree, but this creates an asymmetrical situation where those public officials who want  Covid Safety practices have to abide by them, while those who don't are free to do what they like.

I think this creates a perverse incentive that needs to be eliminated and the way to do that is that when hospital resources are scarce (like now) those who argued against public safety rules should go to the back of the line for health treatment.  As one prominent medical ethicist argues 'If people want to argue 'give me liberty or give me death' they should be held to it.  They shouldn't be able to turn around and say 'liberty didn't work out so now give me a ventilator.''

Okay, what? People obviously should abide by public safety guidelines provided by medical authorities, but that doesn't mean we should deny someone coverage just because they're an idiot. And keep in mind that the OP thread asked specifically about public officials, not just your average layman.

Most likely the comment is too sophisticated for your tiny mind to understand.

Using big fancy words and then calling everyone stupid doesn't mean that you're on a higher intellectual plain than your peers, it just makes you look like a jack@ss.

Why is this so hard for people to understand?  It's one thing to be an idiot and hurt yourself, it's another to be an idiot and hurt other people.

Whether it's in your ethics is up to you, but it's not the job of the medics to choose who lives and who dies. The role of the doctor is to save as many lives as possible, and even though the victim's recklessness may have caused it, it's still up to the doctors to do everything in their power to save anyone they can.

You are still referring to the idiocy the person engaged in that put themselves at risk.  I'm not.

Do you think prisons are an unreasonable restriction on people's freedom?

Apples and oranges. Prisonmates are criminals who break laws and intentionally try to hurt people. You don't go to jail just for being stupid. And even still, if an inmate breaks their leg or has a heart attack or something, you still give them medical attention.

LA county swung right by 5 points likely due to their large Asian and Latinx population shifting right. White voters in California shifted more left from 2016 and it balanced out almost evenly.

Meclazine on drug addicts:

All you can do is round them up, put them on a convict boat and ship.them half way around the world and forget about them for 250 years.

The mental gymnastics our culture has taken is astonishing, really. Drug abuse, a crime that only negatively affects the user themself, deserves a punishment akin to mass murderers and pedophile networks. Either you're missing the point of saving drug abusers from themselves, or you're a psychopath.

[DeSantis is] also an incredibly high IQ individual, which is obvious after talking to him for around five seconds.

I've actually met the guy, and I (and everyone else I know who has met him) can confirm that he is a fairly high IQ person. You don't graduate from Yale or Harvard while being a dumbass.

Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?

What I disagree with:
America was founded as the land of religious freedom. Related to this, a state religion is always a bad thing.

Why:
America was the land where England sent its religious extremists. Some like Puritans were Taliban-like, while others like the Quakers were just considered odd.

As far as state religions, I would argue that the lack of a state religion is what led to today's fundamentalism. For all practical purposes, New England had a state religion, and isn't particularly religious today. Southern colonies were Anglican (and less religious than the rest of the nation), but the church didnt have much influence in sprawling rural areas, which led to every idiot interpreting the scriptures in his own nutty way. Sometimes its nice to have scholars interpret sources - imagine if you were teaching a class in your specialty and every student googles up some nonsense and claims you're wrong because google says so.

I wish you would stop minimizing the terror-fueled reign of the Quakers. Their famous acts of violence and denying UN food supplies to starving friends ought to be condemned to the highest degree.
