Goldwater and Mongoose run as pretty generic if Hawkish Rs. (Some midwestern state) Sen. WM wins the  D nomination on an unabashedly populist and even somewhat socially conservative platform. Facing a potential progressive exodus from the ticket he chooses NC-12 Rep. Peebs as his running mate, calming progressives though not exactly helping him out with sunbelt suburban folks who don't like populism or progressivism. OH is the tipping point state.
