FOX is reporting that the troops did ask him to surrender before he was eventually shot.

There's also unconfirmed reports that there are pictures of him after he was shot.

I assume this was done so that his burial ground doesn't become a magnet for nutjobs from all over the Muslim world.

That was exactly the reasoning, and I think it was VERY smart.

Also, the reason it was done so quickly was to abide by Islamic practice, which apparently requires the body to be burried within 24 hours.
