OK, we need to have a little discussion about reporting posts, because certain people (and it's not just one person) have been going overboard today.

First, please report posts you honestly think need infracting.  That's what the system is for.

However, DO NOT report posts because you have a vendetta against another poster.  So here's a few guidelines on how to figure out what not to report:

1. If you report a post and then quote it, it tells me that you must not have really thought that post was guilty of an offense, if you don't mind it being out there on the forum still.
2. If you know that somebody reported a post of yours, don't go back and report a post of theirs in retalliation, especially if I know you've already seen that post before (like if you've replied to / quoted it).
3. Don't report things for "trolling" when it's clear they're just a joke or sarcasm.  Intent is the key to trolling.  If the intent wasn't malicious, Mikado and I probably won't infract it.

Abuse of the moderation system needs to be infractable, even if it's only in starkly apparent cases.
That would lead to only genuinely offensive material being reported.

It somewhat has... I think most people here know that I'm pretty laissez faire when it comes to moderating... I let a lot slide compared to the other mods, including occasional "light" trolling (as opposed to the heavy trolling with people who are pure trolls).  But when posters get into report wars, and start reporting posts out of retalliation, I'm going infract even the minor trolling that might normally slide.

The problem with the infraction system was quite blatantly obvious. Hell I reported (and apparently got deleted an infracted) a post making a personal attack against someone I find very annoying that I thought was even pretty amusing just because of how I feel about the person who made the post. Remember how Hamilton and his cult of worshipers reported posts against anyone they didn't like for things like using the word "retarded"? And now you can get actual consequences from that! Aren't these type of systems supposed to limit conflict, not increase it?

Report things that actually deserve reporting.  And when people make bogus reports for stupid stuff, it shows they're trolls, and eventually that trolling will spill over to the boards, and they'll be infracted there.  Hamilton isn't here anymore.  The people who used the word "retarded" are.

...of course this never would've become an issue if people like Hamilton were dealt with as soon as was needed.

How is reporting posts different from running to the teacher everytime somebody says a dirty word at recess?

It's not. Kids do that all the time to kids they don't like. They don't do it to their friends.

That's fine, and I don't expect this to change.  People have biases, and I can't change that.  But what I won't tolerate is when people report people for reasons that aren't infractible just because they hope that if they do it enough, the person they dislike might rack up a few points.

I'm just sharing that, not saying I agree with the guy who was extremely odd. He was probably the most extreme "scene" purist I have ever met and basically hated frats for no reason beyond that they weren't "scene" and bragged about beating up nu-metal kids in high school (I have little doubt this was very embellished of course.)

But anyway the point is that this feature is quite open to abuse and we wouldn't have it now if we dealt with people like Hamilton and HoffmanJohn the correct way.

I have no problems being a "narc" and having you report the "drug dealers".  Just stop going around reporting every car that does a 2 mph rolling stop at an intersection because the driver gave you a mean look 2 weeks ago.

Then explain to me how this was a personal attack, when he added nothing to the pledge.  Or are you admitting that your original post was a personal attack/trolling against MD1990:

I made that because I was pretty frustrated at how people keep responding to his posts despite that he basically just makes the same exact 5 over and over. Anyway it's kind of ridiculous to infract me for that after tolerating it for awhile and not infract LarryT.

1. I was asking why you reported Kalwejt for basically saying about you what you said about MD1990.  Trust me, there are plenty of people here who view you as a troll just as you view MD1990 as a troll.  So, how was Kal trolling / making a personal attack if you weren't?  And who's LarryT?

1. I don't know where you got the idea that he wasn't infracted for that, but he was.

2. You STILL have not answered my question: Why did you report that post for trolling/personal attack?  When he quoted what you said about MD1990, how could it possibly have been trolling/personal attack unless your post was as well?

And for the record, both of you were trolling there, but it was so minimal I normally would've let it slide.  The reason I infracted it was because both of you were abusing the reporting system, so if you're going make extra work for me, I'm not going to give you a free pass on the small stuff.

You see, your failure to answer my question confirms my thoughts--you didn't really think Kalwejt was trolling.  You reported his post for personal reasons because you had a grudge.  If you really thought he was trolling, you would've said so, but your avoiding answering my question because you know I'm right.  And that is the behavior that I'm asking everybody to stop.

Well, less than an hour ago, you said that you didn't do this.  I'm glad you were able to admit it; now I'm just emphasizing that it's not going to be tolerated anymore.  And again, this is NOT directed just at you... there are multiple people who've been doing this, and this is everyone's final warning.

And for the record I will stand by that Kal has no right to complain, this is like someone who got off on a technicality for a serious felony whining about a traffic ticket.

And I agree that Dave should've been harsher on him when he had his sock.  Under the new system with Nym, Kal probably would've been banned.  But the statute of limitations has kinda run out on that, and ultimately, that's not something that affects the day-to-day running of the FC/OT boards.  That's something that's above my pay grade.

I know that some of us do it because we like this forum, and we want to make it a better place.  To put a blanket statement over all of us saying that we do it because it makes us feel important and powerful is like saying that the only reason people upload election data is so that they can see "Data for this Contest was Contributed by [Your Name Here] on YYYY-MM-DD."

I'm proud to never have reported any post. The trolls that post report-worthy material eventually get banned anyways.

No offense, but your reply was seriously lacking. The obvious rebuttal would have been to accuse of me doing the same thing in Atlasia, though you seemed to have missed that.

Well, you had no proof of the claim you were attempting to make (at least not for the moderating team as a whole).

Well, I mean, I'm such a great and humble person that I really don't think it matters what I think about myself.  So, why don't you and a couple dozen other posters tell me about how I'm not an egomaniac, but really a great person who has no character flaws.  Sometimes I just sit around and think about what a great person I am... ahh, good times.
