Heading off a lawsuit over compliance with a federal voting rights law, California officials have agreed to help millions of state residents register to vote.

Under a deal announced Monday by several voting-rights groups, the state will send voter registration cards to nearly 3.8 million Californians who have applied for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

The move will ensure that many residents can complete or update their registration in time for the June 3 primary election, representatives of the groups said, and bring the state into compliance with the National Voter Registration Act of 1993. The law requires that certain state offices provide clients with registration opportunities.

The Department of Motor Vehicles and state offices that aid low-income mothers and the disabled are also among the agencies required to provide registration services.

Look at my voter turnout chart that I made after the 2012 election:

Look at the "VEP/RV gap" column.

CA has the largest amount of 18+ citizens that are currently not registered to vote (5.5 million).

What California needs to do is start mailing NVR forms to people in other states.

I wonder if CA is the only state to send out these voter registration forms to Obamacare-applicants ...

And if yes, why is the federal government not implementing the same thing, or at least all the states controlled by Democrats ?

I mean, I'm pretty sure the Republican-governed states would be opposed, because the biggest fear of the Republicans is that every eligible citizen in the US gets the chance to vote ...

I've heard prior discussion about this, but I don't know all of the states that are doing it. One somewhat red state is doing it:

Well, good.

But if you look at my voter turnout chart once again, KY has already registered 92% of its eligible voters.

Of course, the closer to 100%, the better.

But an effort like this would be more needed in states like AZ or OR for example, where only 70-80% of eligible citizens are currently registered to vote.

Or in Texas where 3 million eligible people are currently unregistered.

...

Why does the Obama administration not show a spine for once and go ahead with sending out the voter registration forms to anyone who applied for health care ?

And why are the Republicans having a problem with the government registering millions of previously unregistered people ?

In every other civilized western country this wouldn't even be an issue, because all parties in these countries would be uniformly in favour of automatically registering ALL eligible people ...

But not in the USA.
