Thune is likely next in line but watch out for Rubio, Ernst, or Tim Scott as potential dark horse successors - all three are incredibly popular among their colleagues and there will be a real desire to put a serious and young female or diverse face on the party.

I think Rubio has too good of a thing going as the obvious Foreign Relations chair-to-be. Sure, he could do both, but better not to fray relationships in the event he wants to springboard into the White House or Foggy Bottom.
