For me, its apparently the fact that I eat ketchup on my scrabbled eggs.  Apparently, only people of lower breeding would do such a thing... I acctually had a girl decline me for another date because I did this.

while I agree that ketchup on scrambled eggs (scrabbled?) sounds disgusting, I find it disturbing that you date girls that would reject someone based on this.  Btw, what kind of 'date' involved scrambled eggs, other than breakfast the morning after?

As for me, I'm far too unfailingly polite to be truly upper-class (petite bourgoeisie all the way).

It didn't end quite like that, she said "Yuck!  Only poor people do that."  And then she started bombarding me with questions about my family.

Hilarious!  That's what you get for dating Republicans.

I thought of one more about myself - my complete lack of interest in sport/physical activity.

How is an interest in sports an upper-class thing?

I always thought of it that way - skiing, golf, raquetball, etc.  Sports are expensive, and anyway you know the British public school ethos of sport.  Most working class people in the US have neither the time nor the space for sport.

The way I speak gives me away as being upper-middle class.

How does that sound exactly?  I speak a sort of flat, unaccented standard American English, and was raised petite bourgeois, but I never really connected the two.  In my experience many working people also speak a flat, unaccented standard American English.

It's not my accent, though that's clearly not working class Dublin either, it's the words I choose.

Oh I just assumed you weren't actually Irish.. it is a bit different there.

Addresses can cheat. I live in an extremely exclusive area on a very fancy road , but in a tiny old flat - the only address on the road that isn't fancy Cheesy

On the other hand. One thing that I consider bad behaviour is eating with your elbows on the table and with the fork in your right hand. I wouldn't call it low class, just not having been raised properly.

The fork would make most of America "low class."  Only a left handed person would eat with his left hand.

I live in a neighborhood that is suppose to be in the ghetto, violent, where everyone uses drugs.  It isn't like that, but as soon as I say "North Philly," everybody assumes that I'm a bad ass.

I acctually use my utelsils "European" Style.

Me too.. my mother always insisted that we do so.  Interestingly here in Thailand one eats with the fork in the left hand, and a large spoon in the right - it is wonderfully effective! Great at getting all the sauce or curry soaked rice.  Now when at home I often eat this way, except the spoon provided is usually small, so it looks rather funny.

Are pork cracklins those deepfried pieces of pig hide?  Those taste alright, but I'd rather just eat bacon.

Yep, sure are. Actually, upon reading, I'm amazed how popular they actually are in the world outside the south. They are very popular in Mexico as well.

Thailand too!

I don't know about "low class," but I am a big jeans and t-shirt kinda guy.  Most of my t-shirts are a few years old, so they are faded a frayed in some spots.  But then again, I don't get "dressed up" to go to Lowes or Staples or anything.  I don't see the point.  hahaha

'Big jeans'?  As in baggy? Wink

But seriously, you must wear the business suit to work, no?

Am I the only person who doesn't know too many people over 25 who still have teeth?

Actually, a foreign born friend of our family has a 'second career' as a parole officer, and she always likes to point out that poor people in america generally loose their teeth at a very young age, not to mention myriad other health problems.  Essentially they have never had any access to health care, and have lived brutally unhealthy lives.

Does anyone else here say "bring/brang/brung"?

What about "buyed" instead of "bought"?

Am I the only person who doesn't know too many people over 25 who still have teeth?

Out of morbid curiosity, how do you loose them that fast?  I mean if all you did was brush them twice a day, they'd probably last a while.  Do you guys purposely do things that ruin them-eat rocks or open beer bottles with them or...?

Poors don't have any dental care MaC - they typically have malformed and misplaced teeth.

As for meth, WalterMitty, that may be a reasonable point, but keep in mind that its use is caused by poverty and oppression.

I haven't been to a dentist in quite a while and I still have all my teeth.  A toothbrush and toothpaste don't cost a lot of money and brushing three times a day doesn't take a lot of effort.  Sorry, I don't buy your excuse.  I'm from an area with a lot of rural "poors" and most people still have their teeth, those who don't, well, they are usually just scumbags, quite frankly, or they are on meth, as Mitty suggested.

It is very funny that you wish to attribute dental troubles to 'moral' failings, Supersoulty!

really, I heard meth was used across the board-well maybe not the richest, but plenty of middle class (and yes, a middle class does exist) soccer moms that want to escape the insipidness of suburban living and such...

If you ignore him... oh, you know what I'm going to say.

Gabu, you are attempting to ignore a common political perspective held by millions of people, not just one poster.  This is not at all realistic if you wish to examine or understand politics.

As for middle class soccer moms taking meth, MaC, thats ridiculous.  Of course we may be talking about working class people mistakenly called 'middle class' by americans.  On this, as on every issue, Bandit is absolutely correct.

Hey States, have you ever had deep fried chicken skin?  I have just been eating a whole big plate of that - I think they were feet originally, but with the bones removed..  They deep fry them so they end up very similar to pork cracklins.  Salty, fatty, delicious!
