I tend to agree, but I think the odds of passing entitlement reform are slim to none.

It is also political suicide, DC.  What the losing party needs to do is pretend they're going to 'get something' - like this 'entitlement reform', let the top rates go up to something more reasonable, and then stick on a fig leaf of some nonsensical cuts - like defense and what not.  They can't win anything here.
