No I honestly think it is a rarity, isn't it? I've never known anyone who was breast fed, as far as I know. Certainly no one in my family. I can't even imagine my mother or any of our female relatives considering such a thing.
Why is it a rarity?
I think the vast majorities of mothers breast feed. I have several friends with babies... and they all breast feed. My baby cousin was breastfed until about a year old. My nephew was too.
I'd think it's much more rare to only formula feed a baby. I figured most all moms breastfeed and supplement it with formula so they don't have to pump.
I think back in the heyday - say 1950s-1980 or so - it was very rare to breastfeed. To be honest I simply cannot imagine my mother doing such a thing, nor anyone of that generation.
I suspect women thought it would 'ruin their breasts', and/or smacked of poverty not to buy the formulas, and/or simply found it disgusting or disturbing to be suckled.
