Homosexuality was probably at least as common in Lincolns day. I'm pretty sure that women were less available then. And since situational homosexuality always develops in the absence of women - see prison, the Navy, Muslim countries - I'm sure frontier America was quite gay.
Has anyone seen the movie 'Dead Man'? A Johnny Depp western, in which he and his Indian friend stumble upon some grizzled prospecters. The interesting part is one is attired in a dress, and it is implied that he provides sexual favors for the 'alpha' Mountain Man. They plan to force Depp into this role as well. To me that scene seemed very believeable.
