As any young person entering the job market knows, many people take unpaid internships in the field they hope to have a career in. They're a general resume booster, and many people go from unpaid internships into employment with the same company.
In fact, practically the only people I know who have jobs in the industry they want to have a career in are those who held unpaid internships in past summers.
But what's the point of a minimum wage if companies can just reclassify you as an "intern" instead of a "laborer" and pay you nothing at all? If you can willingly sign on to work for absolutely nada, why couldn't you sign on to work for $4 an hour, with hopes you'd be hired full-time and get a much better salary?
