I would like to Case to win but in the end it appears he will lose by a small margin, however, he has raised enough doubts about Akaka's age to make it close apparently.

Clearly average Hawaiians think more of Case than they do of Akaka.  The matchups:

AKAKA (D) 58%
COFFEE (R) 30%

CASE (D) 63%
COFFEE (R) 21%

Case is fiscally conservative but socially liberal.  He is a member of the Blue Dog Caucus but still voted against a Ban on Same Sex Marriage and a Partial Birth Abortion Ban.

I think Case's campaign is getting a lift because of the political climate in which he's running.  Voters seem angry at the establishment, at 'Washington insiders' and people in power in general.  This is why Case is apparently effective and within striking distance of Akaka.

For a Democratic state, Hawaii can be quite patriotic.  One statistic showed that for a Kerry state it was one of the least disapproving of Bush, whereas in New Jersey Bush had a 70%-29% disapproval rating, in Hawaii it was only 55%-43%.  I think Case is banking on Hawaiins' loyalty to American troops.
