The leaders of the Free WorldTM agreed upon not to show up at the World Cup.
Even though the German people are sharply divided in question if it is good to let Russia stage that tournament (45 for / 42 against), the vast majority disapproves of the boycott.

There is also a painfully obvious split between East and West Germany concerning the question if it was right to let Russia hold the World Cup; the vast majority of the East Germans agree while a slim majority of the West Germans disapprove of the venue choice.

My prediction for the first important game of this tournament, which will start in 20 minutes:

Spain 2 - 1 Portugal

Sorry Mike88.

I hope also that Portugal is gonna lose.
Firstly, because their win of the European championship was one of the biggest frauds in the history of football.
Secondly, because I scorn finally convicted tax evading multimillionaires.  Grumpy

I feel so sorry for Aziz Bouhaddouz. Cry
He scored an own goal for Morocco. In the 95th minute! After a draw!! And therefore delivering a win for (geopolitical) opponent Iran!!! I think he will never overcome this self-disgrace.

Bouhaddouz was born in Morocco, but grew up south of Frankfurt. He currently plays for Hamburg's notorious left-wing soccer team FC Sankt Pauli.

Looks like Portugal is going to win the group.

Whew! Initially, I thought you were about to say they were going to win the whole tournament.
Let's not forget, Ronaldo Portugal did not win against Spain.

France and Germany are lucky because the World Cup in Russia is taking place in the summer

Linking a tournament to two similar historical events. You easily converted the penalty kick. Muitos parabéns! ⚽️ 😝 👏

Maybe Germany will be a victim of the curse of the outgoing World Champions...

I think they're rather a victim of Erdogan's moles ...

I'm really enjoying this World Cup so far. Iceland managed to tie with Argentina. Germany lost to Mexico. Switzerland held Brazil to a tie. And the first game I watched (Spain/Portgual), even missing most of it, had one of the best endings (albeit due to a very stupid foul on the part of Spain).

You can add Colombia and Japan to your list...

Anybody else really surprised with Japan's win this morning?!

It would be so damn funny if Senegal and Japan are going to advance to the knockout stage, leaving to strong teams from the two soccer continents behind.  Mock

Why would Iceland beat Croatia? The best they can do is a tie, but I don't understand why Atlas is overestimating them.

Because Iceland did an incredible awesome job at the European championship in 2016.
They surprisingly beat England in the round of 16.
Moreover, they tied with the eventual European champion Portugal during the group stage.
But the most surprising surprise was the game against Austria, which they scored a 2:1 in the 95th (!) minute.

Our squad contains, 3 Kosovars (Shaqiri, Behrami, Xhaka), 1 Macedonian Albanian (Dzemaili), 1 Croat (Drmic), 1 Bosnian croat (Gavranovic), 1 Bosniak (Seferovic).

Let's be honest, what hope have Serbia got against the whole of Yugoslavia?

Interesting fun fact about Granit Xhaka: While he plays for the Swiss national team, his brother Taulant is a member of the Albanian team. 2016 marked the first time that two brothers were playing against each other in two different national teams during a European championship (1:0 for Switzerland during the group stage).

During a World Cup some such thing only happened once, too:
Gauland's unwanted neighbor Jérôme Boateng played for the German national team against his brother Kevin-Prince Boateng, a member of the Ghanaian team during the group stage in 2010 (1:0 for Germany).

I REALLY want Germany to be eliminated today so that the World Cup curse continues...

You can't imagine how many Germans agree with you, albeit for two other reasons...

Sweden had so many chances to bury Germany in the first half.

The penalty??? I thought there was a new video system.

Manuel Neuer would have held the ball anyway, thus a penalty kick was unnecessary.  Tongue
