You've been to every single British and Irish county?

Oh, if we count British and Irish counties, too, then it's Norfolk County, England.

European posters shouldn't assume that the closest county is Aroostook, Maine. It's true for Germany, but some parts of Southern Europe, like much of Spain and Portugal, are probably closer to Washington, County, ME, and parts of Scandinavia, like Helsinki, Finland, are closer to North Slope Borough, Alaska than anywhere in Maine.

For the northernmost part of Scandinavia it is indeed North Slope borough and also regarding Helsinki you're right, but if you go to Oslo the nearest U.S. county is Aroostook again. The same applies to London and Istanbul.
When it comes to the closest U.S. county to Lisbon, Washington County, Maine, is winning by a grain.

If you don't count Alaskan boroughs as counties, then the answer for Europeans is always a Maine county, almost exclusively Aroostook County.

I repeat.  For our European posters, their closest country they've never been to is probably one in Ireland or the United Kingdom.  For that matter, Nova Scotia has counties as well.

Now we've come to a question of linguistic philosophy.
In another thread of mine, about cities in New York, I learned that most cities in the US wouldn't be called cities if they lay Germany.
Even if we stay in the US, the question arises if we consider Alaskan boroughs and Louisiana parishes counties. And what about Carson City or Saint Louis?
Shouldn't German Landkreise be considered counties, too? If we do so, what about French equivalents of counties? The cantons?
And when MB opened this thread wasn't he thinking of U.S. counties only? Are twins, who bear both the same DNA and the same name, the same persons? Those are questions only users named after elementary particles can answer...

True, but under either point of view, is a county only something called a county or is it any second-level administrative division, there are counties closer to you than those in the U.S.

I think the opening poster was asking for American counties. If you include all counties of the world, you shouldn't stop at the counties on the British Isles. In my case the answer would probably be Landkreis Stade. LOL.

Incidentally, in SC law, towns and cities are all municipalities which get to choose when they incorporate which title they take. The smallest city is Chesnee with 868 people in 2010 (down from a peak of 1280 in 1990) while the largest town is Mount Pleasant with some 67,843 in 2010, up from 6,155 in 1970.

That's an interesting fact that I didn't know about and that my English teachers didn't know about either. The German equivalent of an American city is a town. Wow!
