Senator Kennedy Announcement Speech

Thank you everyone, thank you.

Over 40 years have passed since my father was elected president. He took power in a turbulent time. The future of the economy was uncertain. The nation was divided among racial lines. The threat of nuclear annihilation hung over the head of millions of Americans. Despite all this, my father wanted to be president because he believed, at the core of his heart, that we as a nation could do better.

That simple idea is why I got into public service. We have an economy that favors the rich over the working class. Millions of Americans struggle to get by, while our President continues to support the business elite. Education is becoming less and less affordable, while also becoming  more and more important. Our healthcare system lags behind the rest of the world. It’s been five years since the Columbine shooting, and we still lack a comprehensive gun control plan. All the while, we face threats from abroad unlike any we have ever contended with. All of you saw the Towers fall. All of you felt the confusion and the fear when President Alexander declared the War on Terror. When I walked the streets of New York City, I saw it on the faces of every person on every street corner. The uncertainty weighed on us, but we didn’t let it stop us. We banded together, we rallied, and we came out of that tragedy a more united nation. That is the beauty of this country, when we face tragedy, we don’t let it divide us.

But what is truly important is making sure such a tragedy never happens again. To do that, we need stronger leadership. We need a commander and chief who has faced such tragedy head on, and we need a leader who wants to help people, not corporations. That’s why I’m running to be your next president.  As your president, I’ll work to build a broad coalition to combat terrorism. I’ll decrease unemployment by punishing outsourcers. I’ll build an economy that lifts millions out of poverty. I’m running, because we as a nation can do better. Thank you all!

Schedule and endorsements will be out later tonight.
